Unanimous (2011)

Director's Notes

Unanimous. The word has come to mean so many things to me since I started this documentary in November of 2009. Most recently it has come to mean exhaustion, as I am a single gal working on this without any type of crew or production team attempting to organize and create a documentary out of a series of projects being worked on by people around the world. This documentary may have started as my idea, but it is in no way my documentary alone. It has become so much more than that. It is proof that people can come together internationally and work together for a common goal and make it work. Unanimous has become a social study of sorts, proving that people who may not have the same religion, culture, nationality, beliefs CAN put all of that aside and work together to make something amazing happen.

Why are you making Unanimous?
Many people have asked me why I am working on this so hard, putting in so many long hours, and doing it alone, no budget, no crew, without a local production team. My reason is simple: I wanted to prove it could be done. It certainly isn’t for the money as there isn’t any. I doubt i’ll recover any of my out of pocket costs, but I believe in the message. Every day is a challenge and sometimes I feel like quitting, but I’m too stubborn to quit.

Is Unanimous a commercial for NASA?
NASA has bent over backwards providing me footage, support, and is allowing (probably for the first time ever) me, a no-budget documentary film maker without huge production company backing, to interview one of the astronauts in-flight aboard the ISS. With that said, the documentary is pro peace through space but I am willing to include opinions of those who may not believe such a thing to be possible. While Nasa has provided me countless materials and liberties, the message of the documentary Unanimous is one of “peace,” and how through space programs, countries work together in ways they may not inside our atmosphere.

Saving a seat for 17 nations
In the true spirit of world peace, nearly half of all Space Shuttle missions have carried international experiments and satelites into space improving our Earth and the lives of all who live upon it.

Why volunteer?
Maybe you’re a lover of space, manned space flight, and exploration, but there are also people participating that aren’t that interested in space. Many volunteers are interested in finding a way to make peace on our planet, and believe that through countries working together on a common goal leads to a more peaceable world. Other volunteers are on board because they wish to be part of something that’s never been done before, participating in history in the making. So what is in it for the volunteers? I’m sure each would have their own answer and each answer would be different, but every one of the volunteers can be proud of the fact they helped put this giant puzzle of a documentary together, and they can show it to their family and friends and say they were part of making history by working on Unanimous.

How is everything being done?
Through passionate volunteers who toss in an hour or two hundred assisting in every single aspect of Unanimous. The volunteers doing research and development have allowed me to work in other areas of production, but I work alone in the management and production aspects, research project conception, specs, assignments and tracking, as well being the creator, writer and director.

What’s in it for me?
Everyone who knows me knows how much I loathe production; my place is behind the camera itself, not a computer or editing bay. So why would I put myself in the Producer’s Desk? The satisfaction of seeing something I believe in come to fruition: peaceful international cooperation. So, quite literally, I am at war with the odds of completing Unanimous because I believe in peace.

Peace out in space!
